Safe Youth Space
At Balkan Heart we are creating and providing a safe youth space where young people can develop skills, share ideas, engage in team building activities and express themselves freely so that they can shape, grow, and flourish as future leaders.
September 2026
This September, our Safe Youth Space workshop introduced participants to the topic of peacebuilding and explored how creativity can support communication, dialogue and more positive relationships in youth work.

The team working together
Through non-formal education activities, group discussions and creative exercises, participants had the opportunity to reflect on what peace and non-violence can look like in everyday situations. Rather than approaching peacebuilding only as a large or complex issue, the workshop focused on simple behaviours and attitudes that can make a difference in groups and communities, such as listening, empathy, respectful communication and understanding different perspectives.
Participants also experimented with a few creative methods, including visual expression, writing and movement-based activities. These exercises offered a simple introduction to how creative approaches can help young people express thoughts and emotions, connect with others and open conversations around difficult or sensitive topics.
Another part of the workshop focused on communication and conflict. Participants discussed how misunderstandings can develop, how different needs and perspectives can influence a situation and how calm and respectful communication can support more constructive responses. The aim was not to provide advanced conflict-resolution tools, but to introduce some basic ideas that can be useful in everyday youth work.
The session also created space for participants to share their own experiences, exchange ideas and reflect on how they can contribute to more respectful, inclusive and supportive environments within their groups and communities.
By the end of the workshop, participants had gained a general introduction to peacebuilding, non-violence and creative youth work, together with some practical ideas and methods that they could continue exploring and adapting in their own work.
August 2026
This August, our Safe Youth Space workshop focused on a topic that is becoming increasingly important in youth work: mental health and wellbeing.
Through interactive activities, group discussions, creative exercises and moments of reflection, participants had the opportunity to explore mental health in an open and accessible way. Rather than focusing only on challenges, the workshop encouraged participants to think about what helps us feel well, connected and supported in our everyday lives.
Together, they explored how we can become more aware of our own wellbeing and the wellbeing of those around us. They also learned more about active listening, supportive communication, healthy boundaries and self-care, while reflecting on simple ways of creating spaces where people feel comfortable expressing themselves and asking for support when they need it. These elements reflect the broader approach of using non-formal education and experiential learning to strengthen practical support skills.
An important part of the workshop was understanding that supporting mental health does not always require having all the answers. Sometimes it begins with listening, being present, respecting each other’s needs and knowing how to offer support in a responsible way.
The workshop also gave participants space to exchange experiences, learn from one another and think about how they can build and maintain supportive environments within their groups and communities.
By the end of the workshop, participants had gained a better understanding of mental health and wellbeing as well as practical ideas for taking care of themselves, supporting one another and contributing to safer and more compassionate youth spaces.

July 2026
As part of the Safe Youth Space project, we organised an interactive workshop focused on sustainability, aiming to empower young people to become more environmentally conscious and active members of their communities.

Dream Cleaning Team
The day began with a workshop where participants explored the concept of sustainability, learned more about current environmental challenges, and exchanged ideas through creative brainstorming activities. Through open discussions and teamwork, they reflected on practical ways to adopt more sustainable habits in their daily lives and contribute positively to their local communities.
After the workshop, we turned ideas into action by organising a community clean-up in the Agia Sofia area of Thessaloniki. Working together to clean the neighbourhood, participants demonstrated that even small collective actions can make a meaningful difference for both the environment and the community.
They also learned that sustainability is connected to everyday choices and that everyone can contribute through simple but consistent actions. By combining learning with direct community action, they better understood the importance of shared responsibility and collective participation in protecting the environment.
Throughout the activity, participants strengthened valuable skills such as teamwork, communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, initiative, and active citizenship. At the same time, the experience offered them the opportunity to reconnect with nature, build stronger relationships with one another, and experience the positive impact of working together towards a common goal.
Through initiatives like this, Safe Youth Space continues to create safe and inclusive spaces where young people can learn, grow, and transform their ideas into meaningful action for a more sustainable future.
June 2026
In June, the Balkan Heart youth hub hosted a creative workshop focused on sustainable fashion, environmental awareness and the role of young people in reimagining the future of the fashion industry. Inspired by the concept of Project Re-Runway, the activity brought together young creative minds in a dynamic and supportive environment where fashion became a tool for identity, communication and positive social change.
Throughout the workshop, participants had the opportunity to explore how style and sustainability can go hand in hand. Through non-formal education methods and hands-on creative activities, they reflected on the environmental and social impact of the global fashion industry while learning how recycled and repurposed materials can be transformed into meaningful and wearable artistic creations. The workshop encouraged participants to look at “waste” not as something useless, but as a valuable resource for creativity, innovation and environmental responsibility.
A key part of the experience was the practical and collaborative nature of the workshop. Participants worked together to exchange ideas, experiment with materials and develop new ways of thinking about clothing, consumption and sustainable living. The activity strengthened their teamwork, critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills, while also giving them space to express their personal style and perspectives in an inclusive and intercultural learning environment.
The workshop concluded with creative outcomes that reflected the participants’ ideas around sustainable fashion and the power of repurposing. More than just a activity, the experience highlighted how youth spaces can empower young people to question current habits, imagine more responsible alternatives and use creativity as a way to protect the planet and inspire change within their communities.

May 2026
This month, the Balkan Heart youth hub hosted a creative workshop focused on sustainability, environmental awareness and the role of art in inspiring positive social change. The activity brought together young people in a dynamic and supportive environment where creativity became a way to explore important environmental topics and encourage active participation within the community.
Throughout the activities, participants had the opportunity to work with different artistic methods including photography, theatre, music, creative writing and video-making. Using non-formal education and teamwork-based activities, they explored themes connected to climate change, sustainability and environmental responsibility while sharing their own ideas, experiences and perspectives. The workshop encouraged participants not only to think about environmental challenges, but also to find creative and practical ways to communicate these topics to others.
A key part of the experience was the atmosphere created within the Balkan Heart youth hub. As a safe and welcoming youth space, the hub offered participants the freedom to express themselves openly, collaborate with others and develop new ideas in a supportive environment. Through discussions, reflection groups and creative collaboration, young people strengthened their communication and teamwork skills while building meaningful connections with one another.
The workshop concluded with creative presentations and artistic outcomes that reflected the participants’ ideas and perspectives on sustainability. More than just a learning activity, the experience highlighted how youth hubs and safe spaces can empower young people through creativity, collaboration and active engagement with social and environmental issues.

April 2026
This April the Balkan Heart youth hub hosted the youth exchange “Frames of Connection: Capturing Stories Across Borders”. The initiative created a dynamic and inclusive environment where creativity became a bridge for intercultural dialogue, highlighting the importance of dedicated youth spaces in fostering connection and collaboration.
Through non-formal education, interactive workshops and teamwork activities, participants explored photography as a tool for personal expression, social awareness and storytelling. They engaged with a variety of approaches, including expressive, psychological, social, polaroid, black-and-white photography, while also examining important themes such as ethics, media influence and responsible content creation. This combination of creativity and critical thinking encouraged participants to reflect on both their individual identities and broader social realities.
At the heart of the experience was the Balkan Heart youth hub itself, a safe and supportive space where young people could openly share ideas, build trust and learn from one another. Daily reflection groups and collaborative projects strengthened communication, cooperation and mutual respect, allowing meaningful intercultural connections to emerge.
The exchange concluded with a joint exhibition that showcased the participants’ work, capturing diverse perspectives and shared narratives developed throughout the program. More than a creative outcome, it reflected the power of youth-led initiatives when supported by inclusive environments.
Projects like “Frames of Connection” underline the vital role that youth hubs play in empowering young people, offering them not only the tools to express themselves, but also the space to connect, grow and actively engage with the world around them.

March 2026
This month at U.S.B. started with another activity that helps empower and develop youth participation. This time, a group of students from a Danish international boarding school active in the field of non-formal education visited Balkan Heart, USB’s youth hub, to learn about youth opportunities and any upcoming projects in Thessaloniki. This was a great setting to create a dynamic space for dialogue, collaboration and intercultural exchange.
The meeting was mainly focused on teamwork, the exchange of ideas and learning more about each other’s countries and cultures. One of the primary purposes was for the dedicated young attendees to get informed about youth participation and be driven to take a proactive role as members of society. Through open discussions and interactive activities, the young students had the chance to share perspectives about youth engagement, education and social participation in their respective countries.
Since the visiting students are already familiar with non – formal education through their own educational environment, the discussion naturally connected with one of U.S.B.’s key objectives: promoting the value and impact of non-formal learning. The meeting therefore served as a starting point to discuss the topic about how non – traditional education can empower young people, encourage critical thinking, and strengthen active citizenship through experiential learning, collaboration, and community-based activities.
By sharing examples of ongoing and upcoming projects in Thessaloniki, our organization had the chance to showcase how such initiatives create meaningful learning experiences beyond the traditional classroom. The conversation also encouraged students to reflect on how they can use non-formal education methods to engage with social issues and take part in youth-led initiatives.

February 2026
This month, Balkan Heart, U.S.B.’s colorful youth hub, came alive once again with the energetic and inspiring presence of young people. This time, a group of 9 participants from Thessaloniki gathered here to prepare for their upcoming youth exchange programme in Germany, bringing curiosity, enthusiasm and a desire to learn together.
The meeting focused on team building, helping the participants get to know one another, strengthen connection and build trust and cooperation. Through interactive discussions, they explored practical details about the journey ahead, while also reflecting on their roles as representatives of our local community abroad. This process highlighted the significance of youth participation and shared responsibility, empowering young people to take action showing that their voices matter and can make a difference.
Beyond the practical preparations for the trip, Balkan Heart became a space for fostering youth development and empowerment, encouraging the participants to share experiences, exchange ideas and build confidence while also taking a proactive role in the decision – making of the youth exchange. By creating an environment where young people can connect, collaborate and explore opportunities, our hub demonstrated how supportive and inclusive spaces can nurture growth, curiosity and meaningful engagement before mobility experiences.
That day was more than planning a trip – it was about teamwork, building friendships, sharing knowledge and inspiring each other. Collective learning helps young participants feel more motivated, informed and ready to step into their exchange programme with confidence, enthusiasm and a sense of belonging. Balkan Heart once again showed that when young people are given the space to express themselves and feel included, they can feel more empowered to grow, lead and make an impact on society.

January 2026
In January we started the year together, the Balkan Heart way, as our local volunteers gathered at our youth hub on January 14 to welcome the New Year together by following one of the most beloved Greek traditions – cutting the “Vasilopita”, a traditional cake that hides a coin for good luck.
More than a simple celebration, the moment was a beautiful reminder of the power of community. Young people came together to share food, laughter and meaningful conversations creating a warm and inviting atmosphere filled with positivity, hope and friendship. Moments like this strengthen the bonds between young people and help them feel empowered and create a strong sense of belonging.
As the cake was cut and the lucky coin was discovered our hub was filled with smiles and cheers symbolizing good fortune and a year full of new opportunities. At Balkan Heart, celebrating Greek culture was another occasion to create a safe and welcoming space where everyone feels valued and free to be themselves.
The gathering was a reminder of how important youth spaces are, as young people come together in a supportive environment filled with connection, growth and solidarity while encouraging youth development and empowerment.
